Where the Crawdads Sing (Now showing in theatres)
This film is rated PG-13 – for language, violence against women, and adult themes
This week, my friends, I am very happy to bring you my review of Where the Crawdads Sing. Where to start? This film is beautiful, smart, incredibly well told, and very well acted.
From the very first moments, as we are made passive viewers from a birds-eye view of the vast marshes of North Carolina and we listen to the opening narration by the main character, Kya “Marsh Girl” Clark, this film captivates you. From there, the film gently moves forward, never rushing through its most important aspect – its characters.
Having grown so weary of the slam bang big action movies that have as much depth as a puddle, I am ecstatic to have seen this film. Based on the novel of the same name, Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya (Marsh Girl) from her abusive childhood though her early twenties. (The abuse actually never really stops – it just changes form.)
I will, as always, refrain from telling you too much, but I will say the story focuses on a death that may or may not have been accidental and the arrest and trial of Kya.
Having traveled within North Carolina, I can say the cinematographers captured the raw beauty of that state, and I expect we will hear their names when they announce nominations for awards in that category. Some of the cinematography is, frankly, breathtaking.
Now this film moves slowly, but it never drags. It is contemplative and takes its time to tell the story and, as mentioned, the filmmakers tell that story with real depth of emotion. You feel for the character; you see how her exile and abuse can happen. It never feels cheap, and no shortcuts are taken.
Though it is two hours and five minutes long, I can honestly say I never at any point felt antsy or bored. This movie doesn’t so much grab you to hold your attention, as it gently takes your hand and guides you through the story, and I, for one, am thankful for that kind guidance.
Five full stars out of a possible five stars for Where the Crawdads Sing. This film is, simply put, wonderful.
