Local events observe National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week
National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week is Nov. 12-20, 2016. Locally, United Way Housing & Homelessness Coalition is sponsoring two events to help community members better understand how these issues are impacting families in our area. Hunger and homelessness are not just big city problems, but are occurring in every part of Marathon County.
On Tuesday, Nov. 15, there will be two screenings of a recently completed documentary, “30 Seconds Away – Breaking the Cycle,” about homelessness in Milwaukee, followed by group discussion focused on the differences between homelessness in an urban setting and in more rural communities. The screenings are being offered through a partnership with NTC and the AOD Partnership.
The screenings will be held at Northcentral Technical College Center of Health Sciences building at 1000 Campus Dr., Wausau. The programs will begin at 1:30 and 6 p.m. and will be broadcast to regional campuses in Antigo, Spencer and Phillips. Continuing Education Units are available through NTC.
On Friday, Nov. 18, the community is invited to participate in The Road Home Bus Tour to visit local shelters and a public housing site. The tour will depart from the United Way office at 705 S. 24th Ave. at 11 a.m. and return at 1:15 p.m. The event is free ($10 box lunch optional) and seating is limited. Registration is required either on-line at www.unitedwaymc.org or by calling 715-298-5726.
