Marathon County Public Library is celebrating Game and Puzzle Week with an afternoon of board games. MCPL will offer “It’s Your Move: MCPL Game Day” on Nov. 15 from 1-4 p.m. at the Mosinee Branch Library, 123 Main St., Mosinee. Tweens in grades 3-5 can learn all about earthquakes during “Tween STEAM: Earthquake Science” on Nov. 15 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Marathon County Public Library’s Wausau Headquarters, 300 N. First St., Wausau. Kids will learn the basics of plate tectonics, earthquakes and tsunamis and how they occur. After, they can recreate the primary and secondary waves of a quake and simulate what happens when a quake runs along a plate boundary. Free and open to all tweens, no registration required. Visit the Marathon County Public Library to share your favorite songs, stories and memories. MCPL will host Phonographic Memory on Nov. 17 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Wausau Headquarters, 300 N. First St., Wausau. Folks are invited to bring in a record and spend a few minutes sharing a story about a particular song of importance to them, then play the song. Anyone wishing to share a song and story must pre-register. Spectators are also encouraged to come watch and listen with no registration required. Attend a presentation focused on the history of the one-room schoolhouse on Nov. 17 from 6-7 p.m. at the Marathon County Public Library Mosinee Branch, 123 Main St., Mosinee. Gary Gisselman from the Marathon County Historical Society will lead the presentation, which will explore the use of one-room schoolhouses in the 19th and 20th centuries, including in Marathon County. Holy Name of Jesus annual All Holiday Sale will be Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Nov. 13 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; again on Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Nov. 20 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. All items are bargain priced and include everything from indoor/outdoor decorations, holiday clothing, gifts and collectibles. Join the Marathon County Public Library’s Family Fun Night on Nov. 21 from 6-7 p.m. at the Edgar Branch Library, 224 S. Third Ave., Edgar. Kids and families will hear harvest-related stories and get to make fall and harvest crafts. Free and open to the public with all supplies provided by the Edgar Women’s Club. Children can kick off the holiday season by writing a letter to Santa Claus! Beginning Nov. 21, parents can pick up a blank letter from the Marathon County Public Library’s Wausau Headquarters or from its Edgar, Hatley, Marathon City, Mosinee, Rothschild, Spencer or Stratford Branches. Children can then drop off their completed letter in Santa’s Mailbox at one of those locations any time through Dec. 16. The library will send all the letters up to the North Pole and children can expect to receive a handwritten response by mail in mid-December. Free and open to the public. Park St., Spencer, to apply for a passport on Nov. 21 from 3-7 p.m. Appointments will be taken but are not required. Kids and parents are invited to a special Family Story Time that revolves entirely around the Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 22 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Marathon County Public Library Rothschild Branch, 211 N. Teens can get creative when the Marathon County Public Library offers “Decorated Ceramic Tiles for Teens” on Nov. 23 from 1-5 p.m. at the Athens Branch Library, 221 Caroline St., Athens. Teens will use various colored Sharpies to decorate a plain white ceramic tile, which can later be used as a decoration or coaster! Make one for yourself or to give to a friend or family member! The Shriners 21st Annual Breakfast with Santa will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Wausau Masonic Center, 130 N. 1st St. (across from the Wausau Mall). This “all you can eat breakfast” is a fundraiser for Shriners Hospitals for Children, which is a health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Children up to age 18 with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay.
Join the Marathon County Public Library for a children’s program focusing on gratitude and altruism on Nov. 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Wausau Headquarters, 300 N. First St., Wausau. After hearing stories about helping others, kids and families can make cards to be donated to local nursing homes and make pet toys to be donated to a local animal shelter. Need a break from the craziness surrounding Christmas? “Advent by Candlelight,” a relaxing evening of music, refreshments, and the calm that only Jesus can bring, will be held on Monday, Dec. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the Rothschild Pavilion, 110 Park St., Rothschild. Everyone is welcome to come to this oasis of peace from the storm of too many demands on our time, energy and resources.
