Good News Project Celebrates Earth Day
Earth Day is celebrated around the world by individuals who want to help preserve the environment.
FOR WAUSAU TIMES
April 22nd marks the anniversary of the modern environmental movement that started in 1970. The idea was first pitched by a junior senator from Wisconsin, Senator Gaylord Nelson and each year over one billion individuals participate in this special day from over 190 countries.
Good News Project (GNP), whose mission is fulfilling needs at home and abroad through meaningful service opportunities, will participate in Earth Day celebrations by providing special e- CYCLING collection days for the local community.
On Monday, April 22 nd GNP will be open from 9 am – 4 pm and will be accepting unwanted electronics for recycling. The cost for environmentally responsible disposal of these electronics is .45/lb.
Electronics contain components that can be re-utilized sometimes without any processing, saving resources and energy required for initial manufacturing. Metals such as gold, silver, copper, and palladium can be recovered from recycled materials which reduces the production costs of goods.
By avoiding manufacturing components from scratch, resources can be preserved which create less pollution and uses less energy. Electronic solid waste is the fastest growing sector in landfills and represents up to 70% of toxic waste found in landfills.
Good News Project has been a long-standing registered collector with the E-Cycle Wisconsin program. In 2023, GNP was able to responsibly recycle 254,984 pounds of e-waste. Since the inception, e-CYCLING has recycled 3,808,540 pounds of electronics. GNP also promotes recycling with their Health Equipment Lending Program (HELP), facilitating re-use of durable medical equipment donations, diverting more waste from area landfills, and protecting valuable reusable raw materials. Normal e- CYCLING hours are Friday’s 9 am to 4pm and volunteers are needed to run both programs.
Volunteers interested in participating in Earth Day e-CYCLING events or any other programing are required to call GNP in advance at 715-843-5985 ext. 5. For more information on e-CYCLING, email
