Wausau Curling Club hosts Learn to Curl event

Curling season opens by opening the game to the community

The Wausau Curling Club (WCC) opened their season this past weekend by hosting their annual Learn to Curl event at the Wausau Curling Center.

The WCC hosted dozens of interested participants between their two sessions on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. Participants were of all ages with experience ranging from former high school curlers to those completely new to the game.
Regardless of experience, the event gave participants the opportunity to practice the basics of the sport, from pushing off the hack to sweeping to throwing the stone. Participants were taught these skills in small groups by club members in an energetic and supportive environment.
Jim Force, a senior member and Marketing chair of the WCC, said the reason why the club hosts the annual Learn to Curl event is simple.
“We’re always looking for new curlers and new members, we’re a membership and volunteer-driven organization,” Force said. “And, we think curling is a great way to get through the winter because you’re out here several times a week from October through March. It’s a great activity, and we’re trying to spread the sport as far and wide as we can.”

Members of the WCC get to take advantage of the Wausau Curling Center facility — the largest privately-owned curling facility in the United States — and its amenities including eight curling lanes, a large locker room and a kitchen and bar. Force said it’s the events held by the club, though, and the people they’re held with that make being a member special.
“There’s a lot of socialization associated with curling,” Force said. “We have a lot of curling events, bonspiels on weekends, we serve meals, we have a lot of fun curling together. The friendships you form out on the ice with your team members and with your opponents are a big part of it.”
WCC has a variety of leagues available so curlers can experience this activity and socialization regardless of age, curling experience or availability.
“We welcome new curlers, and we do everything we can to help them learn the game and have a good time,” Force said. “We have rookie leagues so a new curler is curling against others who are in the same skill category that they are. Curling also spans all generations, we have junior curling, senior curling and everything in between.”
Apart from hosting the weekly leagues for club members, the Wausau Curling Center also hosts the Wausau East, Wausau West, and D.C. Everest curling teams and multiple weekend bonspiels. Two very special events, though, will be coming to the Curling Center this winter.
“The Scottish men’s curling team is on their U.S. tour, it happens every 10 years, one of their stops is here in Wausau and they’ll be curling against Wausau teams,” Force said. “In February, we have the Wheelchair Curling Team National event here.”
The Scotland team tour will stop at the Wausau Curling Center on Jan. 22, 2027, while the Wheelchair Curling Team Nationals will take place from Feb. 5 to Feb. 7, 2027. The Curling Center also hosts the Wisconsin High School State Curling Championships, which are happening on Feb. 19 and Feb. 20, 2027.
