Marathon County Historical Society to Explore Nearly a Century of The Grand Theater in August History Speaks Program

Posted

The Marathon County Historical Society (MCHS) will continue its 2026 History Speaks series with “The Grand Theater: A Community Hub for Nearly a Century,” presented by Sadie Fisher on Saturday, August 29, at 2:00 p.m. at the Woodson History Center in Wausau.

For nearly a century, The Grand Theater has been more than a place to see a show. It has served as a gathering place for generations of Wausau residents, continually evolving alongside the community it serves.

During the program, Fisher will explore the history of The Grand and the many ways the theater has changed throughout its history. From changes to the building itself to evolving forms of entertainment and programming, the presentation will examine how The Grand has adapted to meet the needs and interests of successive generations while maintaining its role as an important community gathering space.

Attendees will discover how different generations have experienced The Grand and how the theater's place within the community has expanded and evolved over time. Whether gathering for performances, celebrations, cultural experiences, or shared community moments, The Grand has remained a place where people come together.

The story of The Grand offers a unique window into Wausau's changing cultural and community life and demonstrates the enduring importance of shared spaces in connecting a community across generations.

History Speaks is MCHS's ongoing lecture series exploring the people, places, events, and stories that have shaped Marathon County. Programs are open to the public and designed to make local history accessible, engaging, and relevant to today's community.
