D.C. Everest wrestling team wins Regionals

SCHOFIELD – D.C. Everest wrestling hosted the area’s WIAA Division 1 regionals on Feb. 15 and won the event as a team, with a score of 208.5.
The Evergreens had 10 individuals that qualified for sectionals. Wausau East had one wrestler qualify and Wausau West had six.
To qualify for sectionals, the wrestler must finish fourth or better.
Individuals qualifying for the sectional level for D.C. Everest are: Gabe Carter (170) and Orion Boe (220), who both finished as regional champions; Blake Heal (126), Demitrio Covarrubias (138), Payton Vaughn (145), and Jack Johnson (285) all placed second; Freddy Lehrke (152) and Nick Klug (182) both finished third; and Gavin Peterson (106) and Easton Block (120) placed fourth.
Wausau East’s Maddox Rye (126) finished third and is moving on to sectionals.
Wausau West’s qualifiers are: Gabriel Balang (106), who finished second; Gabriel Ramos (132) and Noah Baumann (160) both placed third; Athan Somers (170), Nathan LaRue (182), and Joseph Nienow (195) all finished fourth.
Wisconsin Rapids finished second with 199.5. Third place went to Marshfield with 191.5 and SPASH finished fourth, with 157.5. Wausau West was fifth with a 116.0, then followed Merrill, Rhinelander, and Wausau East.
D.C. Everest will wrestle against Hudson in River Falls on Feb. 18 for team sectionals.
The WIAA Division 1 Individual Sectionals will be held Feb. 22 at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.
