George W. Maher’s Role in the Establishment of America’s Indigenous Architecture 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2024
FOR MMC
Some of Marathon County’s most interesting and historic homes were designed by the architect
George W. Maher, including the original Woodson home that is now home to the historical society.
Maher is important not just for designing notable prairie school homes in the Wausau area, but also for
his extensive career across the Midwest. Join us for this History Speaks presentation by Kevin Brown
to learn more about the life and career of George Maher, with a focus on his architectural training,
lineage, development, and legacy.
Kevin Brown is a researcher and founder of the George W. Maher Society, whose mission is to
celebrate Maher’s life and legacy, and to research the architect’s known works, while uncovering and
documenting unattributed designs to add to the Maher portfolio. He has experience in architectural
restoration and preservation, developed with his own home, a 1900 Maher-designed house in the south
Chicago suburb of Blue Island. In addition to his role with the Maher Society, he recently worked for
nearly three years as Executive Director of Pleasant Home Foundation - an Oak Park, IL nonprofit
charged with the preservation of Maher’s master work, Pleasant Home – and currently serves as
Executive Director of the Blue Island Historical Society.
