Curling teams from around the nation will be competing on the ice at the Wausau Curling Center, Oct. 23-27. The local club will be host to the 2024 USA Curling Arena National Championships featuring the top 12 men’s and top 12 women’s which qualified during regional competition.
Men’s and women’s teams from Sioux Falls, Cleveland, Alabama, Omaha, Cedar Rapids,
Rochester (Minn.), California, Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth, Spokane, Boise, St. Louis and La
Crosse will be throwing rocks for the title.
Defending national champions are the Myers men’s rink from Dallas-Fort Worth, and the Segovia women’s rink from Houston. All told, the teams, their coaches, families and boosters are expected to bring 200-300 visitors to Wausau for the championships.
Arena curling features teams who do not play at a dedicated curling rink but curl in their communities on ice used for a variety of activities like ice hockey or figure skating.
Teams will arrive in Wausau for a practice day on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Competition begins at 8am Thurs., Oct. 24, with the opening ceremonies set for 3pm that day. The ceremonies will feature a bagpipe procession of the teams, and a welcome to the local curling club and the Wausau community.
Play continues Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26, starting at 8 a.m. with games taking place throughout the day and into the evening. The semi-finals are set for 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, and the gold, silver and bronze medal games will be at 2 p.m.
The public is encouraged to attend and watch the action in the Wausau Curling Center’s large heated spectator area. Admission at the door will be $10 per day or $30 for the entire series. Children 15 and under will be admitted free. Octoberfest food and beverages will be available.
The games will also be live streamed on the Wausau Curling Club’s You Tube site. “Wausau has been a great partner of ours, and we’re thrilled they are able to welcome our nation’s best arena curlers in 2024,” said Dean Gemmell, USA Curling CEO. “The competitors in this event are so dedicated to the sport, putting in countless additional hours just to get on the ice in their arenas. I know they will enjoy the opportunity to play in one of the premiere curling facilities in the country.”
