As of Jan. 10, less than 20 people have completed the online Schofield recreation survey, so the city has extended the deadline to Jan. 31. The deadline had originally been set for Dec. 31, 2016. Residents may still use the same paper survey printed in the Winter 2016 edition of the Schofield Spotlight, or go online here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SchofieldORP. In late 2016, Schofield started working on creating a five-year outdoor recreation plan to lay out what is needed for parks and other recreation.  The Schofield Spotlight newsletter has an article asking residents for their outdoor recreation improvement input via an online survey. Submission of the outdoor recreation plan to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources establishes eligibility for the city to apply for a variety of Federal and State grants to offset some potential improvement costs. “Parks, water access, and bike routes all make up Schofield’s outdoor recreation,” said Fred Heider, a planner with the North Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission hired by Schofield. “We need to find out from the public what they would like Schofield to improve.” One important question has to do with bicycle ridership. The Wausau area bicycle route network passes through Schofield on the Business 51 sidewalk. Currently it is illegal to ride your bike on Business 51 in Schofield. “One question we have for residents is if Business 51 should legally allow bicycles on it,” said Mark Thuot, Schofield’s Public Works Director.
