Marshfield Clinic Health System finalizes acquisition of St. Clare’s
Hospital renamed Marshfield Medical Center-Weston
For MMC
MARSHFIELD – Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS) completed its acquisition of Ascension St. Clare’s Hospital in Weston on Aug. 1 and is renaming the hospital Marshfield Medical Center-Weston.
The transaction also includes the transfer of Ascension Wisconsin’s 50 percent interest in Flambeau Hospital in Park Falls, Wisconsin and The Diagnostic & Treatment Center in Weston (DTC), which offers a broad range of advanced diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical services to meet the needs of area physicians and their patients. Both will be transitioned into the Health System over the next couple of months, including the renaming of Flambeau Hospital to Marshfield Medical Center-Park Falls.
MCHS and Ascension first announced a memorandum of understanding for the sale in October 2019. A definitive agreement was reached in February. Terms of the sale are not being disclosed.
“This is a historically important day for our Health System and the communities we serve,” said MCHS CEO Susan Turney. “Having a hospital in the Weston/Wausau area allows us to create a fully-integrated campus combining our hospital and clinical facilities, which provides highly-coordinated care that is efficient and creates a simple and seamless patient experience.”
“We will bring this same model to Park Falls as we assume full ownership of Flambeau Hospital. We have long served the Park Falls community, and we are thrilled to have an even greater presence there.”
Approximately 350 St. Clare’s employees became MCHS employees. Flambeau Hospital and DTC will both retain their names and employees as they transition into the Health System over the next couple of months.
The Weston hospital anchors the Weston Regional Medical Center, which opened in 2005 to address the health care needs of central Wisconsin. The Diagnostic & Treatment Center offers a broad range of advanced diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical services to meet the needs of all area physicians and their patients.
Marshfield Clinic and Ministry Health Care, which later joined Ascension Wisconsin, entered into a joint sponsorship agreement in 1994 to operate Flambeau Hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital.
The two health systems previously reached an agreement that led to MCHS’s 2017 acquisition of what is now known as Marshfield Medical Center-Marshfield.
