Visit Wausau is thrilled to announce that the Greater Wausau Area has been selected to host the 2026 and 2029 World Horseshoe Pitching Tournament Championships at the newly opened Greenheck Turner Community Center (GTCC). This prestigious event, expected to draw thousands of participants and spectators from around the world, marks a significant milestone for the region and promises to be a major boost to the local economy.
The selection of Greater Wausau as the host city for these championships is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Greenheck Turner Community Center, Visit Wausau, and local municipalities including Weston, Rothschild, Schofield, Kronenwetter, Wausau, Mosinee and Rib Mountain. The events will highlight Wausau’s growing reputation as a premier destination for world-class sporting events.
“We are excited to host the World Horseshoe Tournament in 2026, which will be excellent for the community and summer tourism,” said Aaron Mull, Director of Community Services and Special Projects at Greenheck Turner Community Center. “GTCC, along with the CVB, actively recruited this event, among several others, to the area. This endeavor was made possible through close collaboration with local municipalities. Our team is dedicated to making this a memorable experience for all attendees, and we look forward to the positive impact it will have on our local economy.”
Jodi Maguire, Director of Operations at Visit Wausau, shared her enthusiasm, stating, “We are beyond thrilled to see the Greater Wausau Area being selected as the home of the 2026 and 2029 World Horseshoe Tournament. A lot of planning and educational pieces went into play while bidding on this opportunity. Working with state and local horseshoe clubs and establishing a working relationship was an essential component in making this possibility a reality. Another key component was working directly with the NHPA to ensure the required criteria were met, and maintaining open communication to build a strong partnership and commitment to the tournaments. Bringing the World Horseshoe Tournament to Central Wisconsin will have a significant impact on our community and boost the overall economic impact to our region.”
Tim White, Executive Director of Visit Wausau, added, “Securing these championships reinforces Wausau’s status as a top-tier destination for major sporting events. We are proud to host these tournaments and are confident they will leave a lasting legacy in our community.”
The World Horseshoe Pitching Tournament Championships are expected to bring a significant influx of visitors, filling local hotels, restaurants, and attractions, and providing a substantial economic benefit to the area. Visit Wausau and Greenheck Turner Community Center are committed to delivering an exceptional experience for all participants and attendees, ensuring the success of these landmark events.
