FOR THE WAUSAU TIMES

We are a non-profit organization that provides support, education and advocacy throughout the Marathon, Lincoln, and Langlade counties. We advocate on behalf of individuals and families affected by mental illness. NAMI Northwoods has office space at Grace United Church at 535 3rd Ave Wausau.

NAMI Northwoods is excited to have Kerri Spromberg, certified Yoga instructor from Live Today Mind Body, present an introductory session on Trauma Informed Yoga. This session will take place on Thursday, Feb. 9th from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm at Grace UCC.

What is Trauma Informed Yoga? It’s no secret that yoga does wonders with the body and calms the mind. Now, there’s growing evidence that modified yoga, when taught by a specially trained individual and employed in a therapeutic context, can be a tool of healing and empowerment for people who have experienced trauma.

From a scientific perspective it allows the body to come out of the sympathetic nervous system in a safe, non-threatening way and come into the parasympathetic nervous system of rest and relaxation.

While many cognitive therapies approach trauma as a problem of thinking, a trauma-informed yoga instructor views it as a challenge of living in a body with which you can’t have a relationship with.

During this session we will begin to learn how to set an intention, manage energy levels, create boundaries and use mindful practices to help reconnect with ourselves. These tools and practices will help build clarity, depth and abundance, allowing us to become more present and aware in our daily lives.

This class is free and open to the public and you can register by emailing us at [email protected]
