Two dead in Marathon County crash

MARATHON COUNTY – Two Waukesha County residents are dead after the car they were riding in was rear-ended, causing a chain-reaction accident. The crash occurred June 13, shortly before 1:30 p.m. on State Highway 51 near Brokaw in Marathon County.
According to the DOT, a car driven by a 27-year-old Wittenberg man was going south on 51 when he rear-ended the car in front of him, driven by a 56-year-old woman from New York. Two passengers in the back seat of her vehicle, a 99-year-old woman and an 88-year-old man—both from Mukwonago – were pronounced dead at the scene. A third passenger—a 64-year-old man from New York – was not hurt. Upon impact, the woman’s vehicle was pushed into the vehicle in front of her, driven by a 58-year-old man from Davenport, IA. The man and his passenger—a 54-year-old woman, also from Davenport – were not hurt.
The man who caused the crash was not injured.
The names of those involved have not been released.
The State Patrol and Marathon County Sheriff’s Department are investigating.
Assisting at the scene were the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department, Merrill and Wausau Police departments, Wausau and town of Maine Fire and EMS, and the Merrill and town of Pine River Fire departments.
