MARATHON COUNTY – A woman armed with a handgun was shot by Marathon County Sheriff’s Deputies at the end of a Jan. 14 eight-hour standoff in Rib Mountain.
Officers were called to the Days Inn, shortly before 4 p.m., when hotel staff reported a woman with a gun in one of their rooms. Deputies attempted to make contact with the woman as that particular floor of the hotel was evacuated.
Deputies worked for more than seven hours to resolve the situation peacefully. The woman eventually exited the hotel room and paced the hallway while armed with a handgun.
Near midnight, deputies said less-than-lethal options were attempted, but were not effective. The woman then pointed her gun at officers, who in response shot the woman. The woman remained armed with the handgun even after being shot. That’s when negotiations with the woman resumed, and she eventually dropped her weapon. Law enforcement officers and EMS personnel then immediately administered medical attention.
The woman sustained injuries thought to be non-life threatening. No law enforcement officers or citizens were injured during the incident.
The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty for the duration of the investigation, which is being handled by the Wausau and Everest Metro Police departments.
