Local volunteers seek donations with mask-making project
Since the end of March, a small group of Wausau-area volunteers have been working diligently to manufacture face masks for those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. And now, several hundred masks and countless hours later; the group is now asking the community for help in continuing their efforts.
“It all began when my son was in need of a mask and his doctor was unable to provide him with one,” explains volunteer Carol Greuning , of Schofield.
“We searched all over the area, as far north as the Woodruff and Minocqua area, and none were available! So we decided to begin creating masks ourselves.”
Greuning now works with her sister Beverly and other volunteers; Karen Tekipta and Jane Fochs to create the masks. They are made of flannel and cotton material as well as elastic bands to fit over the ears. Carol adds that the masks are customizable to fit most any size. Once finished, masks have been delivered to both local businesses and individuals in need, as well as health care workers.
The group now seeks donated flannel and cotton material of any color, elastic bands and more importantly; volunteers to help sew and deliver the masks.
Those interested in assisting with the project may contact Carol (715) 715-298-9764, or Karen (715) 581-3626.
