WAUSAU – The Wausau Newman Cardinals girls basketball team is two games away from making its third-straight state tournament appearance, and 13th in school history.
The No. 1 Cardinals took advantage of this year’s extra day to defeat Prentice 58-43 in a Division 5 regional final on Feb. 29 at Newman Catholic High School in Wausau. The playoff win came just two weeks and one day after the Cardinals suffered a 59-47 loss at Prentice Feb. 14 – the last time Newman lost a game.
Julia Seidel led the Cards with 22 points. Jadelyn Ganski added 17, while Jaida Heinz scored 11 points for the Cardinals, who scored their 20th win of the season.
The Cardinals are headed for a third showdown with Marawood Conference-South Division rival Edgar. The two teams will meet in a Division 5 sectional semifinal on March 5 at Mosinee High School.
In two previous conference matchups earlier this season, the Cardinals beat the Wildcats by a combined 14 points. Wausau Newman won at Edgar 58-45 on Dec. 16. The Cardinals completed the regular-season sweep with a 41-40 win at Newman High School on Feb. 11.
The No. 3 Wildcats are coming off a 63-47 regional championship win over No. 2 Wild Rose, also played Feb. 29. Edgar is still seeking its first state tournament appearance.
Newman is 20-4 overall heading into sectional action. The Wildcats are 18-7, and have won eight of their last 10 games.
