McLit: Marathon County Literacy Council Inc held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of an additional location for tutoring on Tuesday, Nov. 27. This event was held on the second floor of The Salvation Army at 202 Callon St.

McLit’s objective is to improve the literacy skills and quality of life for adults and families in Marathon County and the surrounding area. The Marathon County Public Library in Wausau will continue to serve as the main office for the organization. The larger space at The Salvation Army will offer McLit the opportunity to tutor many students at once. The organization offers tutoring sessions in many disciplines, including reading, math, writing, financial literacy, health literacy, driver’s license, job hunting and soft skills.

“Our door is open to everyone,” said Connie Heidemann, Executive Director. “The organization is looking forward to working with other stakeholders in our community. So far, we are working with the Open Door, Salvation Army and Community Corner Clubhouse.”

The Marathon County Literacy Council was formed in 1997 and was dissolved in 2011 when it became a part of the Wood County Literacy Council. The organization was reinstated as a 501c3 in 2017.

McLit offers services from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday through Friday, along with tutoring in the evening and on weekends by request. With this expansion, McLit is in need of receptionists and tutors. For more information about the organization, call 715-679-6170 or visit mclitofwausau.org.
